Amnesty
International
Comedy and
Poetry Night
St. Michael's
College Amnesty
Group is holding
one of those
little gigs that
doesn’t come
along very
often. A gig
that has it all:
music, comedy
and slam poetry
in aid of
Amnesty
International’s
Campaign “Let’s
Make it Happen”.
It’s all on the
22nd April,
6-10pm in the
Concert Hall at
St Michael’s
College.
St. Michael’s is
piloting this
mental health
campaign for
school groups
throughout
Ireland. And we
intend to make
it the
touchstone for
all other
groups. That’s
why we have
lined up some of
Ireland’s
freshest talent
to make this
night really
special.
We’re delighted
to announce stand-up
comedienne
Eleanor Tiernan
will perform.
Since starting
comedy she has
performed at the
Kilkenny Cat
Laughs Comedy
Festival, the
Galway Comedy
Festival, in
Best of Irish at
the Edinburgh
Fringe Festival,
and at the
BudLight Comedy
Revue.
The Irish Times
say: "She is one
of the brightest
and most
promising new
Irish comic
talents."
St. Michael’s
very own
talents, Little
Green Cars,
fresh from their
RDS gig that has
landed them a
record deal.
They have been
making waves in
Irish music
circles, and the
swell is getting
bigger and
bigger since a
slot at Electric
Picnic last
summer and
appearances on
Balcony TV, that
netted 20,000
views in one
day.
Dublin
songsmiths, Rhob
Cunningham, who
is currently
recording an
album will also
be noodleing
away on the
night.
Then there’s the
poets: Stephen
Murray, twice a
runner up in The
WHSmith and
Observer UK
Young Writer of
the Year
Awards, and
winner of the
Electric Picnic
Slam Poetry
Championships
2008.
Stephen James
Smith, runner up
in the All
Ireland Live
Poetry Final
2008, The White
House Limerick
and BBC Radio 4
All Ireland Slam
Poetry Finalist,
Belfast 2007.
Dave Lordan, Winner
of the 2008 Strong
Award for Best First
Collection and
Shortlisted for the
Irish Times Poetry
Now Award 2008.
His poetry has
provoked reviews
like: 'Heartstopping
lines' (Mary
O'Malley, Irish
Examiner); His
'Compelling
poetry...immediately
engaging with its
vivid language,
energy and passion'.
(Theo Dorgan and
Paula Meehan, Judges
report, Patrick
Kavanagh Award 2005)
and 'Roars like an
angry staccato of
poemfire,
reminiscent of old
Ginsberg' (www.dublinka.com).
