PART TWO: CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY

 

St Michael's School 1944 - 1970 under the jurisdiction of Blackrock College.

 

19th December 1970: St Michael's becomes a separate community and independent College.

 

Blackrock Era

 

1943

Negotiations re the buying of St Michael’s initiated by Fr. Michael Kennedy CSSp, President of Blackrock College.  The Jacob family were selling St Michael’s.  Situated on Ailesbury Road about one mile from Blackrock College and some people were afraid that the property would be sold to somebody who would open a school there.  Fr. Kennedy approached the Provincial Council and it did not look with favour on this new venture.  Eventually, permission was granted to go ahead and finally the house and property was purchased for £8,000 [€10,157.90].  The property included the house and 11¼ acres approximately.

 

1944

8th May

This day marked the official opening of St Michael’s.  Fr. Michael Kennedy CSSp was present and with him was Fr. Thomas Maguire CSSp (Dean) and Monsignor Moloney, Parish Priest of Donnybrook, who blessed the property.  Bro. John Joseph CSSp was also present on that occasion.

 

The Junior Scholastics from Blackrock paid a visit to St Michael’s on that day.  Among them was Patrick Leonard who was later to become Bursar.

 

The Journal states that there were eight boys in the school.

 

September

The school opened for the academic year with Fr. T. Maguire CSSp as Dean, Brother Aloysius CSSp, Mr. Hugh McCaughey CSSp, and Mr. Tom Flannagan CSSp (Prefects).  There was a list of four classes with a total of fifty-eight boys on roll. 

 

18 September

All the boys and their teachers went to Blackrock College to assist at a Solemn Votive Mass of the Holy Ghost, celebrated by Fr. Michael Kennedy CSSp.   This Mass was to invoke God's blessing on the new academic year.

 

28 September

Fr. Kennedy CSSp visited St Michael's and granted a free day to mark the feast day of the Patron, St Michael (29th September).  This custom of a free day on the Patron’s feast exists to this very day.

 

4 October

The first inter-school match took place between St Michael’s and Willow Park.  The match resulted in a draw and on October 14th the re-play took place.  St Michael’s won 3-0 and it is recorded that Brian Mooney scored the winning try.  Brian later lived in the famous Burren area of County Clare where he manufactured perfume.

 

19 October

Bishop Ambrose Kelly CSSp, Sierra Leone, was the first bishop to officially visit St Michael’s.  Fr. Daly CSSp accompanied him and he expressed his admiration when he saw this beautiful house in the words ‘Gloria mundi........’

 

6 November

Holy Childhood Association introduced into St Michael’s today. 

 

13 November

Fires lit in the fireplaces in the classrooms as weather was cold.  Certain boys were given the task of adding ‘fuel to the fires’ when necessary. 

 

 

1945

27 February

Fr. Dan Murphy CSSp, Provincial, made his first official visit to St Michael’s.

 

23 April

Mr. Walsh of Mount Street takes first official photographs of the boys and staff for the Blackrock Annual.

 

24 April

Fr. Des Connaughton CSSp, former Dean of Willow Park, later Army Chaplain in Egypt, called to St Michael’s. 

 

8 May

VE Day in Europe.

 

23 May

First group from St Michael’s to be confirmed in Blackrock Parish Church by Bishop Wall.

 

25 May

Mrs. Stapleton, Donnybrook, called to St Michael’s.  She is a granddaughter of Michael Meade, former Lord Mayor of Dublin, builder and first owner of St Michael’s (1860).

 

2 June

St Michael's school participated in the Blackrock Annual Sports Day and competed against their rivals, Willow Park.

 

5 September

School re-opens with Fr. Con Daly, Dean, replacing Fr T Maguire who was appointed President of St. Mary’s College.  John Flavin (now Fr. John Flavin CSSp, President/Manager, St Mary’s College,) is listed as a newcomer to the school.  He is the first past student of St. Michael’s to be ordained for the congregation. 

 

 

8 November

Donal McGahan and Donal Brindley made their First Holy Communion at Blackrock College today.  Bishop Ambrose Kelly CSSp said the Mass, assisted by Fr. Con Daly CSSp.  This is the first time that a First Holy Communion ceremony was recorded for St Michael’s.

 

23 November

Mr. Paddy Coughlan CSSp presents some of his paintings to St Michael's.

 

 

1946

23 January

First Mass celebrated in new Oratory, formerly the billiards room.  It was celebrated by Bishop Ambrose Kelly CSSp assisted by Fr. Con Daly CSSp.  Fr. Michael Kennedy CSSp was also present.

 

2 February

Recorded as a free day in honour of Fr Libermann, a custom observed to the present day.

 

24 March

Fr. Diamond CSSp, American Province, Chaplain to the American Forces in Europe, visited St Michael’s. 

 

10 May

Monsignor Meehan CSSp, from The Gambia, paid a visit.

 

13 June

Bishop Heery CSSp of Nigeria and Fr. Brosnan CSSp visit St Michael’s.

 

6 September

Two new Prefects arrived at St Michael’s – Mr. Brian Kilbride CSSp and Mr. Michael Fallon CSSp. First Year Secondary, started this day with eighteen boys on the roll.

 

 

1947

17 January

Dieter Babel, a German refugee, enrolled today.  Published records state that there are four hundred German children here in Ireland at present.

 

27 March

Dr. Liston CSSp, Bishop Elect of Mauritius, visited.

 

September

Mr. Brian Kilbride CSSp replaced by Mr. Michael O’Donnell CSSp.

 

11 October

No Mass in the Oratory today because permission has expired and will have to be renewed.

 

 

 

1948

19 January

School reopens after Christmas holidays with a hundred boys on the roll.   Archbishop Leen CSSp, Mauritius, was given a tour of the school. 

 

18 February

A change of Government took place in the Dail.  Two boys, Brendan and Kevin Norton, are sons of the new Tanaiste and two sons of Mr. McGilligan, the new Minister of Finance, are also students in the school.

 

September

New members of the staff included, Mr. J.T. Houlihan CSSp, Mr. George O’Doherty CSSp and Mr. Aloysius Taylor CSSp.  First recorded lay professor is Mr. Brian J. Kavanagh BA. 

 

 

1949

A new Prefect, Mr. P. Keegan CSSp, replaced Mr. J.T. Houlihan CSSp.  

 

 

14 September

A former student of St Michael’s, James McDonnell, was fatally injured in an accident outside Merrion Church.  It is the first recorded death of a student of St Michael's.

 

 

 

1950

July

Fr. Vincent J. Dinan CSSp is appointed President of Blackrock College.

 

September

Fr. Turlough O’Brien CSSp, becomes a member of staff and the new Prefects were, Mr. Timothy Connolly CSSp, Mr. Tom Cunningham CSSp, and Mr. Jack Gildea CSSp.

 

13 October

Fr. Turlough O’Brien CSSp appointed Dean of St. Michael’s and Fr. Daly CSSp transferred to Blackrock College as Bursar.

 

23 November

Fr. Jerry Foley CSSp joined the Staff.  He was formerly a missionary in Kenya.

 

 

1951

19 February

Fr. Sean Barry CSSp is appointed first Bursar to St. Michael’s.

 

September

Fr. Terry O’Brien CSSp is transferred to St. Mary’s College and Fr. Thomas Maguire CSSp returned to replace him as Dean.  One hundred and thirty-two students on the rolls.

 

1952

September

Fr. Sean Barry CSSp., Bursar.  Staff included Fr. Jerry Foley CSSp Fr. Montes de Oca CSSp and Fr. Jerome Godfrey CSSp.    Mr. John Curtin CSSp., also joined the staff.

 

1953

September

Prefects on the staff included Mr. Hugh O’Reilly CSSp, Mr E. Flood CSSp and Mr. Larry O’Toole CSSp.  150 students recorded on the rolls.

 

1954

September

Fr. Larry Murrin CSSp joined the staff and new Prefects were Mr. Sean Little CSSp and Mr. Hugh O'Donnell.   Students on the rolls: 142.

 

 

1955

September

Second Year Secondary recorded for the first time.  A total of 33 students in Secondary, and 155 in the Junior School, giving a total of 188 students.

 

1956

September

With 32 students on the rolls in the Secondary and 148 in Junior School, we have a total of 180.  Prefects: Mr. Patrick Cleary CSSp and Mr. Patrick Fitzpatrick  CSSp.

 

 

1957

May

St Michael’s won the Leinster Junior Table Tennis Championship.

 

3 September

Fr. Seamus Galvin CSSp appointed to St Michael’s as Dean of Studies and Games.  The staff were: Fr. T Maguire CSSp (First Director of St Michael’s),  Fr. Jerry Foley CSSp,  Fr. John Cahill CSSp, Fr.S. Barry.  Prefects:  Mr. Anthony Little CSSp and Mr. Sean Allen CSSp.

 

1958

September

Fr Fox CSSp appointed Bursar.  Fr. S. Barry CSSp goes to Blackrock.

The College fees: 21 Guineas per student, per annum – the equivalent of €28

 

May:

Fr. C. Sheedy CSSp in charge of Musical Appreciation Society.

Fr. Galvin CSSp and Mr. Bradley planned to train first cross-country team.

 

 

6 December

Outing of cross-country team with Blackrock College to the Phoenix Park.  John Sweeney and Hugh O’Donnell helped Blackrock win team honours.

 

18 December

School concert for staff and boys.  Fr. A. Flood CSSp provided the music.

19 January

Orchard converted over Christmas holidays into basketball and tennis courts, four in all.  Blessed and opened today.  Southern Roads Tarmacadam Company were engaged in the conversion.

 

20 January

Mr. Irwin, Commerce Teacher, Blackrock College died suddenly.  Fr. Dinan CSSp requests the transfer of Mr Noel Turley to Blackrock College to replace him.

 

23 January

Mr. Noel Turley transferred to Blackrock College and Fr. S. Galvin CSSp replaces him as Commerce Teacher for the rest of the year.

 

26 January

Mr. William Bradley CSSp Team Manager of cross-country team, having a very successful year.

 

1 February

Mr. Brian McCarthy, new arrival to teaching staff, takes up a post in the Secondary School.

 

27 April

Both tennis and basketball courts marked during the Easter holidays by Fr. Galvin CSSp and Mr. Bradley CSSp.

 

10 April

Fr. Michael Kennedy CSSp visited St. Michael's, now in its 21st Year.

 

18 May

Thirty-eight boys confirmed by Dr. John Charles McQuaid, Archbishop of Dublin, at Booterstown.  The biggest number yet from the school.

 

19 May

Annual Educational School Outing: Visit to Athlone and Clonmacnois.  Lunch at the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone and a CIE cruise on Lough Rea.  142 boys went on the trip. 

 

8 June

Gregory Dee won the Intermediate Cross Country race.  First time any boy from St Michael’s achieved this honour.  Hugh O’Donnell won the senior race.

 

9 June

John Sweeney won the mile Cross Country championship today.

 

8 September

Fr. Timothy O’Driscoll CSSp, President (Blackrock College).  Additions to the lay staff: Mr. Len Howard, Mr. Patrick Smith in the Senior School and in the Junior School, Mrs. Mellon and Miss Ward.  School opened with 340 boys.  Third Year Secondary introduced for the first time.  Formerly these boys went to Blackrock College.

 

1966

 

18 January

Preparations for new school buildings: phase one.  Old stables knocked down.  

 

21 March

Foundations prepared and cement poured for new school extension.

 

22 September

1916 Jubilee Celebrations - concelebrated Mass in the school.  Colour party of Boy Scouts.  1916 Proclamation read by Mr. Len Howard and Mr. Brian McCarthy led the singing of the National Anthem.  Fr. Nolan CSSp unveiled a memorial plaque to the leaders of 1961.  Ceremony concluded with the singing of “Faith of Our Fathers” by the entire assembly.

 

September

Fr. Matthew Dillon CSSp appointed as Dean of Discipline,  Fr. S. Galvin Principal, Secondary School and Dean of Studies, and Fr. James McGann CSSp, Dean of Games, Secondary School,  Miss Bridie O’Reilly, new member of staff in the Junior School.  110 boys now on the rolls in the Secondary School, which includes two First Year classes. 

 

NB:  The Provincial Council decided that Prefects would be withdrawn from St Michael’s.  The influence of these young men will be missed in the school; grateful thanks were expressed for all their contribution to St Michael’s since its foundation.

 

1967

September

First extension opened for class in September.

 

 

1969

September

St Michael’s registered with the Leinster Branch of the IRFU and played in Section A of the Junior Cup competition.  Fr. Michael McMahon CSSp coached our first Junior Cup team.  Garry Heavey and Colm O’Broin coached subsequent Junior Cup teams.

 

 

1970

January

St Michael's promoted from Section A of the Junior Cup.

 

4 May

Blessing and official opening of the first extension by Dr John Charles McQuaid, Archbishop of Dublin.  This extension included ten classrooms, science and art room, teachers’ rooms, toilets, assembly hall and Principal’s office, also an indoor swimming pool.  CCTV - all classrooms wired to receive both external and internal broadcasts on TV.

 

Summer

Fr Fox CSSp appointed Chaplain to St Vincent's Hospital.

 

St Michael's College (Independent Community and Schools)

 

September:  Fr. Denis Kennedy appointed to St. Michael’s.  He is due to study for the H.D.E.

 

19 December

St Michael’s declared a new community and a separate College from Blackrock.

1971

September

Mr Len Howard appointed first Vice-Principal of St Michael’s College.

Fr. Denis Kennedy, now qualified H.D.E., appointed Dean of Studies

 

September

Fr Laurence McHugh CSSp appointed Dean of Studies for the Junior School.

 

Fr Lloyd Rebeyro appointed to St Michael’s.  He later became Dean of Students in the Junior School and the Senior School, also Editor of the Annual from 1980 - 1983.

1973

106th Dublin Scout Troup founded in St Michael's by Fr. Galvin CSSp.

 

March/April

St Michael’s won the Under 13s Cup for the first time, under the captaincy of Paul O’Dwyer.  Fr. Tony Little CSSp, coached the victorious team.

 

 

1974

March

Foundations laid for new Secondary School extension.  Opened the following September.

 

 

1975

March

29 September

Dr. Dermot Ryan Archbishop of Dublin, blesses the new extension, which included six general classrooms, geography room, physics and chemistry rooms, library, counselling office, testing room, exhibition area, new Principal’s office and 2 lecture rooms.  The Taoiseach Mr Liam Cosgrave, the Minister for Education Mr Dick Burke, our Provincial Fr. W Jenkinson CSSp attended the official opening and reception.

 

1976

January

St Michael’s played in the first Senior Cup Competition in Section A and Mr Terry Buckley was coach.

 

 

March

School Musical production: “Oklahoma”.  Director: Fr. Cyril Sheedy CSSp.

 

St Michael’s won Section A of the Senior Cup Competition and qualified for promotion.

 

June

St Michael’s students entered for Leaving Certificate Examinations for the first time. 

 

September

Total number of boys on the roll in this new academic year reached an all time high: Junior School, 550 and Secondary School 500; giving a grand total of 1,050.

 

19 December

Fr. Cyril Sheedy CSSp appointed Superior of the Community. 

Fr. Aloysius Flood CSSp appointed Principal of the Secondary School and Manager of both Secondary and Junior Schools. 

Fr. Larry McHugh CSSp appointed Principal of the Junior School.

1977

January

Fr. Seamus Galvin CSSp was appointed to assist the National Director of the Holy Childhood Association, having served St. Michael’s from 1957 to December, 1976. He still remains a member of the St. Michael’s Community.

[NOTE:  In 1978 he succeeded Fr. John Hourigan CSSp as National Director of the Society of Missionary Children, and after four year in this post, the Congregation for Evangelisation (Rome) decided to combine the four Pontifical Societies i.e. The Societies of the Propagation of the Faith, St. Peter Apostle, Missionary Children and the Union of Clergy and Religious under one National Director, namely Fr. Galvin.]

[1982] The Development of library takes place, with help of Parents’ Committee. It contains 4,000 books. 

 

1983

February:  Mr. Tony Berigan joined the staff as Maintenance-Groundsperson. His responsibilities include care of pitches, the grounds and helping with the upkeep of the College.  He is welcome to our support-staff.

 

September – Fr. Aloysius (Alo) Flood CSSp leaves St. Michael's for Blackrock College. 

Fr. Cyril Sheedy CSSp retires as Superior and continues teaching in the College. 

Fr. Aidan Lehane CSSp appointed President/Principal of the College, including Superior of the Community. 

Fr. Thomas O’Malley CSSp appointed Bursar of Community and School, but did not take up duty until 1984, owing to illness. 

Fr. P Leonard CSSp retires as Bursar after thirteen years and takes a sabbatical year. 

 

[1983] - Musical production: - “Sweet Charity”.  Director: Mr. Cathal McCabe, Head of Music, RTE.

 

Fr. Sean Guinea CSSp the School Chaplain dies December and is buried in Deans Grange Cemetery.

 

 

1984

March

Past Pupils’ Musical production: - “Pyjama Game”.  Director: Mr. Cathal McCabe, Head of Music, RTE.  Mr. G. Kerwin was the Musical Director for all ten musicals produced from 1975 to 1984,

 

May

St. Michael’s College celebrates Fortieth Anniversary of its foundation.

 

June

Work begins on new sports hall.

 

Drama: - “The Importance of Being Earnest”.  Producer: Mr. Martin Kelly.

 

 

November

Daniel Brottier CSSp, a French Holy Ghost Father was beatified by Pope John Paul 2.  A group from the College visited Rome for the celebration. 

 

 

4 December

2nd Form Junior School presented a play in Irish, ‘Breith Iosa’.  It was produced and directed by Maura Godfrey and the production manager was Carmel O’Neill.

 

1985

April

Sports hall opened. 

 

April/May

5th and 6th Forms Junior School presented “A Variety Entertainment 1”.  Production Manager was Fr. Little and it was produced and directed by Máire Cranny.  Musical Director was Bean Ui Chuileanain, Stage Decor produced by Patrick Carroll.  Lighting by Paul Cantwell and Stage Manager was Garry Lyons. Make-up: Eileen Murphy

 

Graduation Ceremony:  Bishop Donal Murray, Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin, presented prizes.

 

We regret to record that two of our past students - Garrett O'Connor and Brian Hogan – died. May they rest in peace..

 

Drama: - “Othello”.  Producer: Mr Martin Kelly.

 

 

December

2nd Form Junior School presented a play in Irish, ‘An tSlat Draiochta’.  They were the winners of the Dublin Feile and went on to compete in the Leinster Festival.  Produced and Directed by Maura Godfrey and Production Manager was Carmel O’Neill.

 

1986

May

5th and 6th Forms Junior School presented ‘A Variety Entertainment 2’.  Production Manager was Fr. Little, Máire Cranny produced and directed and Musical Director was Bean Ui Chuileanain.  Stage Decor was by Patrick Carroll, Fiona May was Stage Manager and Lighting was by Paul Cantwell. Make-up: Eileen Murphy.

 

St. Michael’s reached the final of the Junior Cup for the first time but were unfortunately  beaten.

 

Drama: - “The Genesis Roadshow”.  Producer: Mr Martin Kelly.

 

December  

2nd Form presented “An Tslat Draoichta” which was produced and directed by Maura Godfrey.  Carmel O’Neill was production manager.

 

1987

April

5th and 6th Forms Junior School presented “A Variety Entertainment 3” and “'The Magic Paintbrush”.  Production Manager: Fr. Little; produced and directed by Máire Cranny; Musical Director, Bean Ui Chuileanain; Stage Decor by Patrick Carroll; Stage Manager, Eric Conway and Lighting by Loman Brophy and Ruth Flannery. Make-up:  Eileen Murphy

 

Mr Jim Buckley took early retirement.

 

St Michael's won the Second Senior League.

 

Fr Seamus Galvin CSSp, elected first President of the Students’ Union for 1987-1988. He wore the new chain of office at the dinner held in St Michael’s.

 

Drama: - “The Children’s Crusade”.  Producer: Mr Martin Kelly.

 

August: 

Fr. Patrick Holohan CSSp and Fr. Patrick McGlynn were appointed to St. Michael’s

Fr. Holohan had a distinguished missionary career in Nigeria and later served on the staff of Rockwell College as Dean of Students.

Fr. McGlynn served in Rockwell as a member of the academic staff (1966-1986) and was Dean of Studies there (1970-1986).  He was also Editor of the Rockwell Annual (1970-1986).  He has been appointed to the teaching staff in St. Michael’s and has also been chosen to edit the College Annual.

 

 

December

2nd Form Junior School presented an Irish play.  They were winners of the Dublin and Leinster Competitions and runner-up in the All Ireland.  Produced and Directed by Maura Godfrey and Production Manager was Carmel O'Neill.

 

1988

Diamond Jubilee celebrations for Fr. John E Byrne CSSp and Golden Jubilee celebrations for Fr. P.J. Nolan CSSp are held.

 

January 

Eileen Murphy, music tutor here since February 1974, is our new Receptionist. The choice was widely welcomed. She will contnue to assist with the Drama production in the Junior/Senior Schools as costume-designer and make-up artist. Over the years, Eileen has also been involved with the contumes and make-up for the various productions of Past Pupils’ musical Society.

St Michael's reached the Finals of the Senior Cup on St Patrick's Day. We were unfortunate to go down 3-6 to Clongowes..

“A Royal Jester” was presented by 4th, 5th and 6th Forms Junior School.  Production Manager was Fr. Transition Year introduced, also European Studies class.  A feature of the Transition Year was the student exchange programme, with students spending time in France, Spain and Germany. Students from these countries came in turn to St Michael’s as the host school.  Work Experience programme introduced.

St. Michael’s reached the Finals of the Leinster Junior Cup and to the great delight of all associated with the College, we defeated Clongowes Wood College (9-7) to bring the first Leinster Junior Rugby Cup to St Michael’s.  Congratulation to team-coach, Mr. Frank Macken and to team-captain, Christian Victory.

 

St Michael’s also reached the Senior Cup Final, but the double proved elusive and we went down to Clongowes (again) 7-3.

August:  Ms Marie Ringrose joined our staff as Facilities Manager of St. Michael’s College. As Facilities Manager she assumes responsibility for a wide range of functions including Estate Management, the maintenance and upkeep of the Junior, Senior Schools and the Community Residence.  She will also deal with Relationship Management with suppliers.

Comdt. Pat Casey (retired) joined the staff as Financial Administrator of St. Michael’s College on 4th February 1992.  He will be primarily engaged in the financial administration of the College and Community combined, covering all aspects of salaries, wages, school Fees etc.

 

25th March: Tragic death of Final Year student, Desmond Healy, following a traffic accident.  Our heartfelt sympathies to his parents and to his sisters Ciaragh and Laoise.

Fr. Lehane announced the appointment of Fr. William Bradley CSSp, his successor as Principal of St Michael’s. 

Fr. Patrick Houlihan, CSSp becomes Superior of the Community.

Fr. Lehane CSSp goes on sabbatical leave. 

Fr Michael McCarthy CSSp was appointed Manager of St Michael’s College (formerly Headmaster of Templeogue College, Provincial Procurator and Provincial)

Mr. John Kelly was appointed Principal of the Junior School and Fr. Laurence McHugh CSSp took on responsible for admissions and records.

28th January: We record with deep regret and sadness the untimely death of John Crowley a member of the Senior School Academic staff. Our profound condolences to his wife Ann, parents Jim and Phil, his brother Martin and sister Mary. May be rest in peace.  The St. Michael’s College Annual of 1993 was affectionately dedicated to his memory.

The sudden death of Tommy Howard, aged 28, occurred.  Tommy was a victim of myocarditis. He was a student in St. Michael’s from 1977 to 1983 and son of Len and Clare Howard, both members of our academic staff. May he rest in peace.
