Junior Certificate Examinations

New Science Syllabus

Investigation Titles 2008

Coursework B

Candidates opting to carry out investigations nominated by the State Examinations Commission for the Coursework B component of the 2008 Junior Certificate Examinations of the New Science syllabi should present reports on two of the following three investigations in the relevant Reporting Booklet in accordance with the instructions in that booklet.

Biology

Florists often supply a sachet of flower food/preservative with bunches of cut flowers. Carry out an investigation to compare the effectiveness of using a commercially supplied flower food/preservative with two other household substances as additives to prolong the life of cut flowers in a container of water.

Chemistry

Marble chips react with dilute hydrochloric acid solution. Carbon dioxide gas is released. Investigate how particle size affects the speed at which mass is lost from the reaction mixture as the gas is released.

Physics

Clothes made from certain fabrics, e.g. denim, are not as suitable for hill walking or mountain climbing. Carry out an investigation to compare the thermal insulating properties of three different fabrics when they are dry and when they are wet. Denim must be included as one of the three fabrics.

[Note The coursework booklets are designed for reporting on different kinds of investigations. In as far as possible the reports should be filled out under all of the headings provided in the booklet. However, some headings, e.g. "controls", may not be applicable in some investigations.]

The nomination of any particular investigation as one of the options for Coursework B does not preclude its conclusion again at some time in the future.
