History Department School Library and Websites All students should use the school Library to research history. This will prove especially useful for those doing a Special Topic at Leaving Certificate level. The following websites are recommended: www.hist.ie - Set up by the Department of Education in-service History team, this is an excellent site, providing access to information on the current curriculum, syllabus and links to sample papers. The site also provides guided access to a vast amount of visual, aural and written sources, both primary and secondary. These sources are tailored to meet the needs of the Leaving Certificate Case Studies. www.examinations.ie – exam syllabus and sample papers www.skoool.ie – a great site for hints and tips in every subject www.libraries.ie - This site provides access to all the books stored in the public library system. Students can find a range of books on a chosen topic, then identify their location and place a reservation on that book in their local library – all online! www.rte.ie/libraries - The national broadcaster has recently opened a digital archive of all their programmes. A site of this type is of immense use when researching a special topic. www.bbc.co.uk/history - This site has a lot of very well researched information on Anglo-Irish relations. Worth a visit! There are also some good online lectures available on the site from a number of well known Historians. www.ireland.com - This is the site of The Irish Times newspaper. A certain amount of information can be searched on this website. The full archives going back 10 years can be searched by subscription only. This is available in the school library. Please ask the librarian, Pat Cowley, to log you on. www.askaboutireland.ie - This website was set up by the Irish Times and gives full access to its archives going back to 1859. No password is needed for this BUT it is only available in schools and public libraries. |
