Mr. Oliver Doolan When I was a teenager, a book that left a big impression on me was To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I was given the book as a gift for my 14th birthday from my sister. A number of things struck me about the book that I just loved: the introduction to such timeless characters as Jem, Scout, Boo Radley and the endearing Atticus; the coming –of-age theme as seen through the eyes of the children; the social insight into a place and time that was far removed from my own experience. Although this book is unique in many ways, today I still get enjoyment from reading books that contain similar themes, the last being The Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. I also enjoy reading books that challenge the way I view the world. Such books from authors like Paulo Coelho, James Redfield, Joseph Campbell and Mircea Eliade exemplify this. I also enjoy reading books from the great American writers like Steinbeck and Faulkner. The beauty of reading is that there is a book out there for everybody. Whether it is to escape or to learn, books are a wonderful vehicle to transport you wherever you want to go. In the words of Atticus, they enable you to walk around in the shoes of other people – to see the world through their eyes. Happy reading. |
