What? Where? What's in the library? Books; CDs; Videos. How are these arranged? They are arranged by either Fiction or Non-Fiction. What do 'Fiction' and 'Non-Fiction' mean? Fiction: novels, stories (books that are not true) Non-Fiction: Books that are true and factual (e.g. sport, history, biography) How do I go about finding a book? To check if the book is in St. Michael's Library you could:
How do I check the Library Catalogue on a computer? Double click on the Heri icon. Click on General OR Advanced Search. How do I check the shelf? Is it Fiction? If so: It will be either on the Fiction Paperback stand OR the Fiction shelves at the end wall of the Library (these are mainly hardback books). There is also a table of paperback fiction books at the end of the Library (these are well-known classics e.g. Dickens, Tolstoy). Is it Non-Fiction? If so: Non-Fiction books are shelved according to what subject they are about and are mainly on the 'clock' wall in the Library. These are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System. In 1876 Melvil Dewey arranged all human knowledge into 10 categories. These are then sub-divided into further categories, (you could think of this as clicking on Menu on a computer which then gives you a drop-down box with more detailed information). Each category has a number on the spine of the book. This means that all the books on the same topic are shelved together e.g. all books on football (either rugby or soccer) have the Dewey number 796.33. NOTE: Some books are large and do not fit on the ordinary shelf. These are on the Large Books stand near the window. (Note that many of the books on Art are large in size). Reference Section These books may only be used in the Library. For example: dictionaries; encyclopedias; atlases; some Art books. Glass Cupboard School annuals and books on the Spiritan Order. These may only be used in the Library. |
